Research for Double Page Article

I have been looking at adverts for documentaries in magazines for ideas for the double page spread.

This article was taken from the BBC history magazine published on July 26, 2012 written by Amy Dale.

This article is about the Victorian age and how collections of these artifacts are being shown up and down the country in 8 attractions around the UK. This article focuses on Bell Pettigrew Museum at the University of St Andrews in Scotland.

No.1 - It contains information about the amount of artifact’s on display and the dates when they were discovered.

No.2 - The use of the big images
makes the article look interesting and eye catching and almost makes the history come alive as there is a selection of taxidermy animals, skeletons and fossils.

No.3 - The use of the documentation of the picture of the Bell Pettigrew Museum allows the reader to see certain parts of the exhibition and could allow them to form an interest in the museum.

However this article is only half of an A4 page and although I have seen ideas that I would use differently from this article it doesn't really aid in the help for creating a double page spread on our documentary of The History of Mann. I have realized that I would need a lot more content and the pictures would have to be of tomb stones and other parts of the Manx history that we are covering. I do find the idea of having big images attractive however are documentary is going to have a presenter so a large image of her is needed as well as other pictures.

This article has been taken from the BBC History Magazine it was published in August 2011, it was part of the 100 places that made Britain series and has now been published into a book. This a full double page spread and the layout of it is attractive and similar to the ideas I have for the layout or the double page spread that I have to create.

No.1 – there is a large amount of content on this article, much more than the last one. This would be the ideal amount of content for my double page spread but I think I will include more pictures of Manx sites as my article is going to be on multiple thins rather than just one beach, the extra pictures are needed to cover all the main points.

No.2  - The use of the big picture of the beach sets the scene for the articleI'm not sure how I would set the scene for my article as it is on 7 different areas of Manx history. Maybe a set of layers images or combine 7 images into a mass images almost like a collage and see how that works. I plan on doing many drafts of this double page spread.

No.3 – The colour scheme of this article is very plain and simple, however since it is based on nature the green and white really suit the theme of the article and it ties the whole thing together really well. For a history article I think a darker colour scheme would work especially when the main topics that we are covering are about tragedies.

No.4 – The use of the smaller images in this article work really well, especially the one of the researcher, I think that this is very effective and might used this idea for my article especially when our researcher is also are presenter.

No.5 – The layout of the article is collum based and this isn't as effective as I thought it would be, I think that the article looks a lot smaller than it actually is because of the smallness of the collums and there positioning. The main body of the article looks fine but as soon as they start inserting quotes and books in smaller collums between the main body of the text it just becomes confusing for the reader as they act as a distraction. The smaller images are linked in with what is being stated in the article and are examples, these are relevant to the article but some of the quotes aren't.

From these two articles I have seen some ideas that I can use for the layout of the article that I am creating as well as a couple things that I know wouldn't work well for the article that I am working on.

  • ·         A big picture is eye catching and will draw peoples attention.
  • ·         As a group we have decided that we are going to go for a modern theme for the magazine double page and the newspaper article as most people find documentaries old and boring we have decided that to attract more potential views we need to make it appeal to a wider and possibly younger audience and we will be doing market research to support this idea.
  • ·         As our presenter is a young attractive female it would be a good idea to use an image of her and make it a little bit larger this would attract a male audience as well as attract a younger audience.
  • ·         I am not going to be using collums in my double page spread, looking at the seconds article I think that they just don’t suit this type of media work and I will be experimenting with different text layouts as well as contrast with text and pictures and trying to balance them out.
  • ·         We haven’t decided on a colour scheme yet but it will most likely be a moderately darker theme as well as making it eye catching. Maybe using a modern font will also help attract a audience with a range of ages. I plan to create three or four of the double page spreads each with the same content but others will be with different layouts and different colour schemes, we then plan to place several of them around college and see which one gets the greatest response.
