My Ideas.

I think I am going to create A tabloid paper for this task, with mainly local news and progress reports stuff like that.A tabloid would suit the population a little bit more this is shown by the fact that The Manx Independent finds its way into at least 1/3 of the homes on the island.
If am going to create the first two pages of a local paper, I need;
  • A name
  • A Masthead/Logo
  • A house style
  • The content for the first two pages.
For the name I am think it would be best to have a Manx theme, although this is not a necessity. Manx people are very proud of their heritage and this is something that I am aware of and most things on this island are Manx themed or have a Manx link. If I am unable to think of a successful name with a Manx theme then we will move on to brain storming general paper names.

The logo depends largely on the name of the paper, however I already like the idea of an distinct font. All three of the Manx Papers have a very recognizable title and although I have only analysed two of them I think it is important to look at all three and take it forward from there.
Each individual masthead has a particular font and is easily recognizable from a distance. Each masthead says something different about the paper.
Isle of Man Examiner looks very traditional and looks like it would have a serious news content.
Isle of Man Courier looks professional and traditional and quite diplomatic in what they are talking about.
The Manx Independent is completely different to the other two mastheads. It was started as a completely different paper to be 'independent' from other Manx papers as they didn't express the view of the people and wouldn't argue politically against the Government. The blue writing with the plain font does give the impression that they are going to have their own opinions and bring something new to the people.

The papers use multiples to predict how many people are going to read or see this paper, and the Courier say that their paper reaches about 98% of the population. It is hand delivered by a paper boy/girl into every home on the Island. It is also in all coffee shops, hospital/doctor waiting areas, pubs ect. This is mainly because it is free, and the distribution is just much easier.

The Independent and the Examiner are charged for, I think it is about 45p for each of them. The Independent is released on a Friday morning and the Examiner is released on Monday morning. The Courier is a free sheet and is released on a Thursday.

I have been thinking about why  I am creating a local newspaper and what people want from the paper, I have come to the conclusion that a local paper provides many functions that the community needs. Manx papers only contain Manx news, were as in some of the English local news papers have an system were news bleeds out of its area and news from other areas bleeds in. Manx papers have to support from the local community and something that should be very active on a local paper is the response page. Every little part of a local paper should be useful to the community whether it is arguments between the members of Tynwald or Douglas Town Library is shutting on a Saturday it is stuff that the population of the island need to know and this is what I need to include in my paper.
