My new front cover.

This is the front cover of the 'i', the smaller version of 'The Independent'. This is a paper that has similar themes and connections with the younger members of the population that I am trying to form, but obviously this is on a much larger scale. My general idea is to create a paper with the theme of the young and getting the young back into reading newspapers along with the community feel that a local newspaper should have. This papers sells an average of 305'000 copies per day, these are figures that are fantastic based on a relatively new papers that will be celebrating its 3rd birthday in October 2013. I have put this image here as a reminder and a bit of inspiration  obviously the layout of this paper does something to attract the younger market, maybe by creating a similar layout my paper would have the same effect.

This is my logo that I have inserted on my tabloid sized 'Microsoft Publisher 2007 edition' page. I did this using the insert and then clicking the picture option, selecting the link 'from folder' and then choosing the image that I wanted.

I have made the logo slightly longer so that it fits into the first third of the page and I have written the phrase 'The islands only independent paper' at the top in the gap. I feel this is important to tell the readers the the papers is not influenced by any government action and that we have the peoples opinion, which is what many people want to read. I have also entered an image of a young girl getting her head shaved in aid of McMillan Cancer Support, I feel that this is a very worth cause and in a community as small as the Isle of Man this would be recognized by the local media and most people would praise her. This story really reflects the sense of community and these is a theme that I have to have in my paper. I must remember that I am incorporating a tabloid 'news' paper and a local paper into one and the balance has to be right.

Here I chose to enter the headline 'Tynwald says yes, everyone must pay tuition' Since I last posted my front cover ideas Tynwald have now made the decision that Manx students will now have to pay £2500 towards university fees and I am still debating whether or not to stick with the story of 'Tuition Stalemate' or bring the paper up to speed. However If i do stick to the 'tuition stalemate'  then it would made the division between the paper and the website when it comes to speed of news delivery. I have created this front cover fist but I can always change it, it is not a problem and the more drafts I have the more I am going to be able to correct small things until it looks professional.

This is going to be were I put the image of the 'MHK' when I can get a picture, which will hopefully be by the end of the week. I have also included a picture of 'Jupiter' with a small caption;

Jupiter’ lands for 3 days to rock our island out of space!

I have added two more boxes of the same length so that I am able to see how much more space I have and to monitor the space carefully.  I still have a small amount of text to ad about the tuition story and then I have another smaller cover story to enter as well.

The small box at the bottom is for the bar-code. I think I will most likely move it down a little so that it fits in with the rest of the boxes.

I have written a short summary of the Tynwald story it reads;

Last night Tynwald passed the legislation so for the first time Manx students will have to pay to enter higher education. The Education Minister Peter Gray says that he is not surprised by the decision to introduce the £2,500 minimum contribution as they are trying to make a £11.5 million saving per year. 'The people have had it far to good for far to long'

I have changed it slightly from the way it had been written on the website, as I don't want readers to think that they are reading the same thing over and over again. The idea behind by website is to be able to offer a range of media types with more in-depth knowledge than you would find in the paper.

I am still carefully watching the space that I have left and monitoring it so that I know how much space I have left for my other cover story and the adverts that I am planning to put on the page.

I have added the papers contact details into the first third of the paper. That way readers are going to notice them and all and know they can contact us if they want to comment or if they have a story.
I have also included the date inside this box as I think that if it put it anywhere else it is not going to fit in as well and part of creating a paper is developing my own house style which is something that by slightly challenging the forms. This paper is targeted at the young people and in order to do that I need to create something that is branching away from the traditional tabloid style and make something that they find attractive.

I am still monitoring how much space that I have left, it is starting to look a lot more full and more like a front page now which is a good thing.

I have decided to advertise the section of my paper that has cross words and various other brain games that some people might be interested in.
I looked in the clip art on 'Microsoft Publisher 2007 edition' and found this image of a chess board, I then cut in down and put it in the corner of the box that I am advertising the exercises in. The colour will attract a bit of a attention and that is always a good thing and it might help people notice it.

I just realized that after putting the papers contact details on the front of the paper, I forgot to put the website address! How silly.

I have also included Facebook and twitter 'url's' which make the paper look very professional and look like it has a solid base of readers, both online and paper form.

This is the advert on the front page for the papers app. I chose a clip art image from the search  I did using the work 'application' and then typed a small summary about what the app will allow users to do. Its a fantastic idea I think that allows our readers to always have the news first as well as event information and various other things.

This is how much space I have used so far, I think that there is defiantly going to be enough room for me to add my second story and a small advert between the exercise advert and the app advert.

I have used a picture of a middles aged couple that I took and put them as victims of an arson attack. I have to have stories about local people, otherwise there will be no clear link that it is a local paper.

I have entered another cover story about Tynwald debating raising the age for driving. I am going to find a better and original image of this, but so far I am just using this one to see how it will look. I feel this is an important topic to put on the front of my paper as it will massively effect a large
majority of my readers.

I have room for 2 more stories and the bar-code. I am beginning to realize that I do not like the layout or the house style of the paper. However I will finish this draft and then talk about the things that I will change.

I have now added the final major article to my paper. Although I am going to change the image because I do not feel is it a correct image to use when someone is going to be complaining to the Government about their lack of emergency provisions for people in need.

The image below is the changed image of Mr Cardoso in a a suite looking much more presentable and this is the correct image to use on the front of a paper.
The only issue I am having is what to put in the last of the boxes on the last third of the page. However as I did say earlier I do not like the layout of the house style that I have created and that is why I am planning to change a lot about the layout of this paper.
